Elliot: I just read where your school district, Irving, TX, is buying netbooks – thousands of them – to replace their aging laptops for their 1:1 program. Have they asked for your input on how those devices should be used?
Cathie: You know the answer to that question: of course not. Have the Ann Arbor schools asked you to help them in deciding how they should use their computing technology?
Elliot: Good point, as usual. Schools call on experts but an expert is someone who lives at least 100 miles away. What was I thinking?
Cathie: By the way, there was a glaring omission in that newspaper article; the article didn’t say exactly how those schools would use the new netbooks except that they “would be used for basic functions as more schools get wireless access and move textbooks and lessons online.”
Elliot: Well then, it appears the schools will use the netbooks just like they used the laptops.
Cathie: That’s the point: we haven’t heard that the laptops have made a significant impact on the metro Dallas schools in general or Irving schools in particular. Why should we believe that the netbooks will have any more of an impact?
Elliot: Couldn’t have much less of an impact.
Cathie: Cheap shot, Elliot. You can get away with that comment in a blog posting because you know no one in Irving will read this blog – and respond.
Elliot: Au contraire! Lots of folks read our blog! Netbook-using, metro-Dallas schools please set the record straight; add a comment to this blog – tell our readership what your plans are for using the netbooks.
Hey guys -- have you heard how the Irving folks are using the laptops? (No, I haven't heard down in Austin.) But, without that info, it "might" be possible that the netbooks are better than the laptops for the selected use. BTW did you ever say anywhere what you believe would be a good use for a netbook? And, are you aware of any research about the optimal screen size for any particular applicaton or maybe for any particular user age?
